China International Leadership Program
The China International Leadership Programme (CILP) is a blended programme built around three outcomes: Mandarin proficiency, intercultural competence, and practical teaching-and-leadership experience. Participants progress through step-by-step learning, then deepen their development through language-and-culture immersion and hands-on application in China.
Rather than focusing on theory alone, the programme combines online modules with hands-on experiences that help participants use Mandarin in authentic settings, understand cultural contexts, and lead with confidence.
The overall approach is practical: language is used for real communication, cultural learning is grounded in lived experience, and leadership is developed through responsibility, teamwork, and service.
Mandarin development is supported through a clear learning pathway. Participants build foundations through structured lessons, guided practice, and targeted skills development. They then reinforce progress through immersion and real-world usage, using Mandarin in everyday interactions and programme activities. This blend helps learners move from knowledge to confidence, and from confidence to communicative competence.
Intercultural competence is developed through cultural immersion and guided educational tours. Participants experience daily life and local contexts while also benefiting from structured guidance that helps them interpret what they observe. Guided tours and site visits add depth, connecting culture to society, education, and the wider economy. This helps participants develop cultural fluency that can be applied in international work settings.
Teaching and leadership skills are built through hands-on internship experience in rural China. Teaching placements provide a real environment to practise communication, planning, facilitation, and problem-solving. Participants learn to adapt quickly, work respectfully with local partners, and lead with empathy. By working directly with rural communities, participants develop leadership skills that are tested in real conditions and strengthened through reflection and feedback.
The programme has the following key goals:
- Develop Mandarin proficiency through guided instruction, immersion, and practical application.
- Develop intercultural competence through cultural immersion and curated educational tours.
- Gain instructional and leadership skills through hands-on internship experience in underserved rural areas of China.
Across the programme, participants are encouraged to set goals, track progress, and demonstrate outcomes. Mandarin skills are strengthened through repeated use and practical challenges. Cultural learning is reinforced by guided reflection and discussion. Teaching placements build confidence through responsibility and real contribution. Together, these elements support a well-rounded development journey that is both personally meaningful and professionally valuable.
Because the programme is blended, click here modules are offered in different formats. Some modules are 100% online, allowing participants to begin from anywhere and build foundations at their own pace. Other modules are mixed-mode, combining online learning with in-China experiential components. This structure creates flexibility while still delivering high-impact, in-person development where it matters most.
The programme is delivered across three pathways, comprising a total of eight modules. Each track aligns with the same core outcomes, while offering different levels of depth, immersion, and duration. Participants can choose a shorter track to gain focused experience, or a longer track to build deeper language ability, stronger intercultural competence, and more sustained teaching-and-leadership practice.
